After selecting a therapist and scheduling your first appointment, you may experience a new set of anxious thoughts. To put your mind at ease, here’s what to expect at your first appointment:
Background Info
The therapist will need to gather a basic history and background information. This helps the therapist get a picture of what you may need in session and determine if they are a good fit for you. Some therapists specialize in specific issues such as addiction or disordered eating while others have a more general practice. If your therapist is not able to meet your needs, they will provide you with referrals for other therapists that are more suited to your needs.
Setting Goals
It can feel uncomfortable opening up to someone new. Take comfort in knowing a good therapist is compassionate and non-judgmental as it is their profession to be. Your therapist may ask questions about your goals related to your therapeutic work. The more specific you are, the better. Your therapist will create a treatment plan that helps you meet those goals as well as provide you with a realistic timeline. Some examples of goals include better communication with a partner, building positive daily habits, or expanding the window of tolerance for uncomfortable emotions. If you are not sure what your goals may be, try and think about the person you would like to be. What does that person do every day, what do they think about themselves and how do they speak to those they care about? It’s okay to not have a goal in your first session, your therapist will be able to collaborate with you.
Have Questions Ready
It can be helpful to have some questions prepared for your therapist. For example: How long have you been practicing? What should I expect in a session? Have you worked with others who have similar problems? How will I recognize therapy is successful?
If you are unhappy with the way therapy is proceeding, let your therapist know so that they can adjust their approach or offer a referral for another therapist who may better align with your needs.
